SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER PROGRAM

KGSCTC offers Substance Use Disorder education for State licensures. The courses meet the required education to obtain license for Substance Abuse Counselor In Training (SAC-IT), Substance Abuse Counselor (SAC), and Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC).

SAC-IT

10 weeks of specialized training program (100) hrs.
State Requirements

01.

Complete pre-credential education. (Provided by KGSCTC)

02.

Provide evidence of current employment, a written offer of employment, internship, practicum or agreement authorizing volunteer hours at an agency providing substance use disorder treatment. (KGSCTC will assist in finding placement however Student is responsible for finding agency)

03.

Must provide Employment Verification from a qualified supervisor. After June 1, 2008, a credential holder acquiring supervised experience as a Substance Abuse Counselor-In-Training may not practice under the supervision of an individual holding a certificate as a Clinical Supervisor-In-Training. (KGSCTC will not provide employment but will assist students in finding employment)

04.

Complete and submit Application for Substance Abuse Counselor In Training including all required documentation and pay required fee. (KGSCTC will provide assistance with completion and assistance)

05.

Successfully complete required examination.

SAC 

32 weeks of specialized training program 
360 hrs.
State Requirements

01.

Complete 360 hours of specialized education in substance use disorder through a post-secondary institution or department approved education program (Provided by KGSCTC).

02.

Complete and submit application for Substance Abuse Counselor including all required documentation and pay required fee (KGSCTC will assist with completion and submission).

03.

DSPS reviews application and makes applicant eligible for the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADC) examination.  Examinations may be taken after completion of education, before experience is completed.

04.

Successful completion of required examinations. 

05.

Submit verification of completion of 3,000 hours of work experience performing the 8 practice dimensions as a Substance Abuse Counselor, supervised as described in (Form #2749), within 5 years immediately preceding the date of application. 3,000 hours of work experience shall include the following: (Completed at your place of employment)

06.

1,000 hours in substance use disorder counseling with at least 500 hours is a one-on-one individual modality setting.

07.

A minimum of 200 hours of counseling during the 12 month period immediately proceeding the date of application, of which 100 hours shall have been completed using individual modality setting.

CSAC

32 weeks of specialized training program (360) hrs.
State Requirements
Pre-Credential Education Information

01.

Must have graduated from an accredited university or college with an associate's degree or higher in a field of behavioral science.

02.

Complete 360 hours of Department approved specialized education in substance use disorder counseling within a department approved program (Provided by KGSCTC).

03.

Complete and submit application for Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor including all required documentation and pay required fee (KGSCTC will assist with completion and submission).

04.

DSPS reviews application and makes applicant eligible for the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) Examination.  Examinations may be taken after completion of education, before experience is completed.

05.

Successful completion of required examinations. 

06.

Completion of 5,000 hours of work experience performing the 8 practice dimensions as a Substance Abuse Counselor, supervised as described in (Form #2749), within 5 years immediately preceding the date of application.  The 5,000 hours may include any work experience hours obtained as a requirement of the substance abuse counselor credential (Completed at your place of employment)
